It takes over 400years for plastics of 60micons to degrade and burning them can cause Cancer. These are a few of the many reasons while the Government of Cameroon has launched a campaign against non-degradable plastics. Meeting in Bamenda this Thursday a delegation from the Central service of the Ministry of environment and protection of nature told pressmen that April 24, 2014 is the deadline for the use of non-degradable plastics in Cameroon. According to the mission after the said date a crackdown on all the users will be launched. All identified non degradable plastics will be seized. They have however recommended some locally made bags as substitutes though they acknowledge will be more expensive. The mission is hopeful the campaign for degradable plastic will work since many will protect what they pay for contrary to the non-degradable which is usually distributed free of charge.
