The announcement was read during the late hours of June 30, 2014 over the state-owned radio the CRTV.
According to the announcement from the prime minister’s office, Diesel will now be sold at 600 instead of 520, while Petrol moves from 565 to 650 FCFA per Littre. The same announcement further states that a bottle of gas of 12.5kg will now sale for 6500 instead of 6000FCFA. The later however leaves some worries in Bamenda as this has been the price of gas in the city. It now seems gas in Bamenda will sale at 7000FCFA.
Kerosene prices however have not been changed from its 350fcfa.
In an attempt to explain the decision government says it is in respect to international norms and marketing situation of petroleum products Irrespaective of the 157billion invested as subvention for petroleum products early this year.
The government further announced a 50% reduction of global tax, parking fee and another which Bamenda city dwellers have described as insignificant. There are also plans according to government to increase civil servants salaries and the minimum 28200FCFA monthly pay in Cameroon. The date for the implementation of the increases is not known.
Reactions captured around Bamenda this July 1, 2014 have been those of dissatisfaction as city dwellers particularly car owners and market women predict an eminent increase in transport fair and prices of basic goods and services. The hope and wish of many here is not to witness the February 2008 incidence that lead to a nationwide protest.
