Never has there in the history of holiday sporting activities in
Nkwen been an activity for people above 50. It has traditionally been a
moment for youths on holidays to celebrate their youthfulness in
football, racing, dancing and some times handball.
This Saturday August 30, 2014 this reporter like many
others went to the Nkwen Fon's palace to behold what was announced as a

novelty "a Competitive Walk" the French will call it "marche commando"
for men and women above 50years of age. No one would have expected the
excitement around the palace just before take-off. In fact some of the
above 50 athletes came thinking it was a marathon and so when they were
reminded it was a walk the anxiety increased as they all flexed their
muscles for the showdown. Allow me not to talk about their outfits but
imagine what it will look like if you see a lady of above 60years with a
small panties preparing for a race. comments reserved. At take off the
feeling was good reason why this reporter decided to follow them as they
walk across a part of the village. At the Mile 5 junction where
coincidentally there was a crowd, the feeling changed

the shouting and clapping from the crowd. This show of appreciation
became a motivational factor as the walkers developed very high speed as
we went through Bujong, Mbefi, Niboung, Mbessi, Mile 4, Centerbolt and
then the Palace.

Tantoh Nicolas (Sponsor) |
When
we contacted the Donor and sponsor of the Competitive walk Tantoh
Nicolas Tanwie a Notable of Nkwen based in Douala he said "I believe
most of Our Old people in the village suffer from many diseases that if
they were to do a little walk everyday they will not have so I think it
is my small way of promoting sports for the elderly"
Coming at
the time the village is just beginning to savor the leadership prowess
and dynamism of their Charismatic Fon Azehfor III on whose honour the
walk is organized, the wish of many particularly the Old is that it
comes to stay.
