Young Cameroonians from the Northwest Region Saturday May 16, 2015 between the ages of 12 and 18 years assembled in the Bamenda Municipal Stadium to showcase their know how in Basketball. The basketball talent showcase falls within a campaign by a Cameroonian born basketball superstar Luc Mbah a Moute aimed at detecting young aspiring and talented Cameroonian basketball players.
With many coming from as far as Bui Division(kumbo) early arrivals were recorded in the stadium by 7am. Though the main Character (Luc Mbah) finally arrived at about 11am, the excitement around the stadium presented a group of young people dreaming big. The boys and girls, their guardians and coaches waited patiently while continuously practicing the game in the already overcrowded cord as many arrived.
By 11am when Luc Mbah himself arrived the ovation was special obviously because they could now see and even touch their "idol". In a brief chat with the aspiring players, Luc Mbah expressed joy being in Bamenda as part of his campaign to detect and support basketball talents in this part of the country where he said he heard had a lot of basketball talents. He then went further to explain that he had been to Douala, Buea Yaounde and was coming to Bamenda with the hope of coming every year thus giving an opportunity to those who cannot be selected to work hard and be selected next time.
He concluded by explaining the process of benefiting from the campaign saying that those who will be pre-selection will qualify for a national camp baptized "luc Mbah a Moute basketball Camp" to take place in Yaounde after which another selection will be for a regional Camp "Boot Camp"
in South Africa. Successful players from South Africa will then have the privilege of benefiting a scholarship that will enable them pursue a basketball career in the United States of America. It this American dream that motivated the boys and girls to give their all in terms of Basketball savvy.
It will not be an overstatement to say that the poorly made basketball cord in the Bamenda municipal stadium hosted a contest that emotionally was tougher than the American NBA.
With the assistance of local coaches and referee the selection went on as the young people played in different shifts and groups.
