In Nelson Mandela’s words “A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.” That special thing I presume is education. It is because of the special status that it is highly celebrated every time an opportunity shows. Saturday 13th February 2016 is another date that adds to the history of National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda. This day the newly baptized University Institute welcomed thousands who showed up for the 6th Convocation of the citadel of academic and moral excellence.
Apart from being a moment to celebrate success, it was also a moment to consolidate its leadership role in private professional education in Cameroon as almost all mentor state and private national and International Universities and institutions to which the Institution is affiliated answered present. In separate interventions, all representatives from these Universities and institutions reaffirmed their support to National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda.

Addressing
the convocation on behalf of the University of Bamenda Uba “the University of
the Future”, The Vice Chancellor Prof Akenji Therese noted that National
Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda has continued to make Uba proud with
the quality of training given students. With her sentimental family attachment
to the late Founder of the then National Polytechnic Bamenda Yong Francis, she
prescribed the motherly advice of honesty and modesty to the graduands. The
ties between both institutions have gone beyond just affiliation as National
Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda has given part of its Campus
buildings to host some faculties of Uba. This according to many has further
inspired the mentor-ship role they have to play in the life of National
Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda.
The
Representative of the University of Buea UB one of the deputy vice chancellors
of UB was indifferent about the highly professionalized training at National
Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda. UB is very proud and will continue
to give the University Institute all necessary support he affirmed.
Noting that Prof Nalova Lyonga VC of UB personally attended the 5th
Convocation, it is more evident the mentor university is satisfied.
The
representative of the University of Dschang like other speakers was
indifferent. He sustained that his university has approved of the teaching
competence of the teaching staff of National Polytechnic University Institute –
Bamenda and as such will continue to give them the much needed collaboration.
Due to transport difficulties to Bamenda, representatives of Engineers without boarders arrived the convocation late but were highly appreciated as they are expected to spend a few days in National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda.
Noting that an affiliated school is an educational institution that operates independently, but also has a formal collaborative agreement with another, usually larger institution that may have some level of control or influence over its academic policies, standards or programs, it could be ascertained that National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda is not interested in joining the many schools with illegal status across the country.

The
guest speaker of the 6th convocation was the Moderator emeritus of the
Presbyterian Church in Cameroon PCC, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Nyansako Ni-Nku. Speaking
on the theme “As in such a time as this”, the moderator emeritus challenged the
students not to be derailed by the flashy things of today’s world. With the
lack of jobs and gainful employment he noted, there is the temptation to one to
follow the train of bribery and corruption which will certainly not be right.
He encouraged the graduands to be creative and to love service not reward.
Yuh
Michael Ayeah representative of the management board on campus; Officer in
charge of Infrastructure and Development and Dr Asongwe Emmanuel Rector of
National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda in separate addresses
recounted all efforts nationally and internationally made to make the
institution attain its laid down objectives of highly professionalized
education.
The
arrival of Engineers without borders at the 6th convocation as well as other
international partnerships created to improve on the professionalization of the
University Institute also exposed new grounds conquered under the leadership of
Yong Jacques Member of the management board and officer in charge of
International Relations. It should be recalled that Engineers with
borders is an international association of some national EWB/ISF groups, whose
mission is to facilitate collaboration, exchange of information, and assistance
among its groups that have applied to become part of the association. EWB-I
helps the member groups develop their capacity to assist poor communities in
their respective countries and around the world.
The
visit to National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda comes at the time
the Minister of Higher Institution has approved the department of Chemical
engineering adding to others like Civil, computer software and wood work in the
school of engineering and technology.
With about ten schools including school of business, finance and management, School of Home Economics, Tourism and Hospitality Management, School of Journalism and Media ,School of Medical and Bio-medical Services, School of law, School of Education, School of Maritime and School of Agriculture and Veterinary Science offering training to different Diploma and Degree levels, National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda has announced Master Programmes to begin in September 2016.
The thousands who were present only reiterates the fact that National Polytechnic University Institute – Bamenda has gained their trust either from the quality of training or the fact their relatives have been gainfully employed thanks to their training at the Anglo-Saxon prestigious institution.
