Charmers Media and Communications Consults (CHAMECC) a Bamenda based non-governmental organization, has made results of a survey conducted recently in Bamenda.
The presentation was done on Saturday April 24th in Bamenda on "the impact of the Anglophone crisis on the population of the North West region."
According to analysed data from CHAMECC, 409 people were surveyed in Bamenda I, II and III. 96% of the surveyed population underrates government handling of the armed conflict while 4% agreed with government measures.
On who is the most affected, 71% affirmed that youths were suffering more, followed by men with 14% approval , while 9% talked of women and 6% for children.
However, 60% noted that they were very proud to
have come from the crisis hit region with 32% relatively proud while 8%
was indifferent.
CHAMMEC used the public event to urge the government of Cameroon to initiate an inclusive mediated dialogue for peace to return to the crisis hit English speaking regions. Some of the recommendations included bringing on board more women in peace building initiatives, and initiating strategies to ceasing fire.
Apart from government, civil society organisations and the media were singled out as partners in peace building. While urging the media to mainstream on peace and voicing for the voiceless, CHAMECC also called on the civil society organisations to base on community driven projects, respect universal tenets, monitor public policies and make recommendations, and create more impact with the government rather than romancing with it.
On the causes of the crisis, the surveyed population pointed out that bad governance, poor adminstration, centralisation of power, uneven distribution of resources, language and injustice accounted for the raging conflict.
Speaking to reporters after the presentation of the research findings, Blasius Charles Nji, CHAMECC director said the survey was to get the feelings of the downtrodden on how the crisis has affected them.
"Findings show that youths and women are the most victimized in the current crisis.Government, Civil Society and the media need to do something." He said.
"Since 2016 when the crisis started, the downtrodden population has been suffering because those who are supposed to be giving good information to government are doing the contrary. This survey will go to people who know the right doors and will use the information to our advantage",added Blasius.
