Cameroon Cup 2021: PWD Bamenda set to challenge own record 42years on

By Bakah Derick

The president of PWD social football club of Bamenda has expressed the wish to see his team challenge their 42year history in the Cameroon Cup competition. According to Abunde Pascal, the current generation of players have the responsibility to do better than their parents and elders who took part in the 1979 competition.

Abunde was speaking in the dressing room of the Bamendzi football stadium in Bafoussam on Sunday 25 July 2021 after his team clinched a first Cameroon Cup semi final ticket since 1979. They have just beaten Avion Academy FC 2-0 following two second half goals by Mael and it is a visibly satisfied PWD Bamenda leadership that addresses the team with a message of satisfaction and encouragement from West Governor Awah Fonka Augustine (From the North West Region) the club's patron.

PWD Bamenda will play Union of Douala in a highly anticipated semi final fixture just like that of 1979 when they faced Canon of Yaounde. It is the club's management wish that the achievement be repeated and a new record set at the finals.

For the records, PWD that year  beat Canon 2-1 in Douala before moving on to the finals which they lost to Dynamo of Douala 3-1 with the Epesse story still fresh in many minds. Ni John Fru Ndi was then President of PWD Bamenda.

PWD are current champions of Cameroon's top tier league and with a not too bright performance coupled with uncertainty around the league, winning the Cameroon Cup will not only set a new record but equally keep the team at the continental scene after their short stay last season.

The other semi final fixture will pit CAF cup semi finalist Cotonsport of Garoua against Astre of Douala. The date is yet to be Known
