The General Manager (GM) for Regulatory and Corporate Affairs (RECA) for MTN Cameroon has described the tree planting initiative by his institution as a “matter of responsibility.” Speaking recently on the heels of the reforestation campaign across the country by MTN Cameroon employees and volunteers, the GM noted that though his institution is a technology company, preserving the planet is of utmost importance.
“We have often been asked this question. For us, the answer is simple: it is a matter of responsibility! We have the duty to preserve our planet, which is now facing consequences of global warming. Trees, as you know, can help reduce climate change effects. As a responsible company, MTN has an obligation to play its part and in doing so, among other things, planting trees. MTN has been doing this since 2008, when we planted 250,000 trees in the 3 Far North Regions.” Jean Melvin Akam said
Being part of the 21 days of Y’ellow Care ptogramme, the GM RECA has been emphatic on the objectives of MTN Cameroon through the reforestation campaign
“MTN Cameroon's recent reforestation drive has resulted in the planting of 1,600 trees. This is just the first step in a vast project that the company plans to roll out throughout the country. This project is part of MTN Group's 'Ambition 2025’ programme, one of whose strategic priorities is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. In Cameroon, we are implementing this vision through the reduction-substitution-compensation triad. Planting trees is part of the compensation process.” He added
Apart from preserving the planet, there are a couple of future expectation from the afforestation campaign
“As I said, it is about taking responsibility for preserving our planet. Over time, we hope to have a positive impact on our carbon footprint and on the environment. We also hope that these trees will be of socio-economic benefit to the communities. This is why we prioritize the planting of fruit trees and species with therapeutic properties.” MTN Cameroon GM RECA concluded.
