The Bamenda City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Paul Achombong, has unveiled its four-year balance sheet, detailing achievements and challenges faced during this period. Mayor Achombong emphasized the council's efforts in various sectors during a rare press conference in Bamenda on Friday 12 April 2024, outlining initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for residents amidst ongoing challenges.
Mayor Paul Achombong took off with one of the notable achievements which is the significant improvement in waste management. He credited the council's investment in equipment and the initiation of a door-to-door campaign for the visible transformation of Bamenda from what was once likened to a dump site to a cleaner environment.
In response to the seven-year-old armed conflict affecting the region, Mayor Achombong made an x-ray of the council's campaign against civic disobedience, particularly targeting the phenomenon of ghost towns, aimed at restoring normalcy and fostering economic activities.
Regarding healthcare, the mayor highlighted the council's efforts in combating COVID-19, including the distribution of hand sanitizers and the installation of wash hand stations across the city. Additionally, the provision of a generator to the Bamenda Regional Hospital and the construction of boreholes in various areas have contributed to improving healthcare infrastructure.
In the education sector, Mayor Achombong noted the council's support for primary schools, providing didactic materials such as books and uniforms to enhance the learning environment for students.
While the mayor remained humble about charity efforts, citing the council's Christian beliefs, he acknowledged the significant contributions made in this regard.
Infrastructure development featured prominently in the council's agenda, with projects such as the renovation of markets like Nkwen Market, road construction from Welcome to Bamenda to the Tradex area at Upstation Bamenda, rehabilitation of roads and initiatives for community road maintenance with community involvement.
In the leisure sector, Mayor Achombong highlighted the construction of a dam at Upstation, complete with a conference center and restaurants, aimed at enhancing recreational facilities for residents.
He also mentioned the construction of the footpath from Upstation to down town Bamenda which is not only for leisure but also for keep fit exercises.
Looking ahead, Mayor Achombong announced plans for the construction of a new market following the recent fire incident at the Bamenda main market, outlining a phased approach to ensure the project's successful completion.
The four-year balance sheet reflects the Bamenda City Council's commitment to addressing the diverse needs of its residents while navigating challenges posed by ongoing conflicts and other socio-economic factors. Mayor Achombong reiterated the council's dedication to serving the community and pledged continued efforts towards sustainable development and progress.
