International Labour Day: Workers in North West Express Need for Better Working Conditions Despite Armed Conflict

In the heart of a seven year-old armed conflict, workers in the North West Region could fine solace and strength in the theme of this year's Labour Day: "Constructive Social Dialogue: Vector of Decent Work and Social progress." Despite the challenges posed by the armed conflict, workers across the region are emphasizing the importance of dialogue in promoting decent work and social cohesion.

In the conflict-affected region, where violence and instability have become daily realities, the significance of Labour Day holds even greater weight. Speaking to The Hilltop Mail in Bamenda, a city deeply impacted by the ongoing conflict, Angela Ajume, a local educator, emphasized the importance of dialogue in creating opportunities for decent work in adversity.

"Despite the challenges we face, Labour Day serves as a reminder that through constructive dialogue, we can strive for better working conditions and social harmony," Njume stated. "In our region affected by war, the need for dialogue becomes even more urgent as we work towards rebuilding our communities and restoring hope for a brighter future."
Similarly, workers like David Mbah, a farmer and teacher in the Bamenda III Municipality, echoed the sentiment of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. "Labour Day is a time for us to come together, to share our experiences, and to advocate for our rights as workers," Mbah remarked. "Even in times of conflict, we must continue to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure that our voices are heard and our needs are addressed."
According to Cameroon's Minister of Labour and Social Security, Gregoire Owona, the theme of this year's Labour Day reflects the global call for dialogue and cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by workers worldwide.

In North West Region, where conflict has disrupted lives and livelihoods, the message fits deeply with workers striving for dignity and stability.

As the region commemorates Labour Day, in the backdrop of an armed conflict, the call for constructive social dialogue serves as a source of hope for many workers. Through unity, resilience, and a commitment to dialogue likely to be fostered by trade unions, they are forging a path towards a future marked by decent work and social harmony, even in the face of adversity.
