The National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon commenced its 49th Plenary Assembly on Tuesday 9 April 2024 in Mbolye-Yaounde, ushering in a forum for reflection, dialogue, and action on critical national issues.
His Grace Andrew Nkea Fuanya, the President of the Conference and metropolitan Archbishop of Bamenda, presided over the opening session, setting a tone of civic responsibility and social consciousness.
Addressing the press following the inaugural session, Archbishop Andrew Nkea Fuanya urged fellow Cameroonians to actively participate in the forthcoming elections slated for 2025. Stressing the importance of effective electoral management, he underscored the pivotal role elections play in shaping the nation's trajectory. He also acknowledged the challenging living conditions faced by many citizens.
Archbishop Nkea Fuanya went on to emphasized the foundational principle of equality for all Cameroonians, regardless of their regional origin. He advocated for equitable access to natural resources and called for collective efforts towards the common good.
Expressing concern over the misuse of social media platforms to propagate hate speech and misinformation, Archbishop Nkea Fuanya urged users to leverage these channels for constructive purposes.
In a reaffirmation of the Church's stance on traditional values, Archbishop Nkea Fuanya reiterated the disapproval of the blessing of same-sex couples by the Bishops of Cameroon. Emphasizing the importance of upholding moral principles, he reaffirmed the Church's commitment to promoting the sanctity of marriage and family.
The 49th Plenary Assembly of the National Episcopal Conference promises to be a platform for robust deliberations on issues ranging from social justice and human rights to environmental stewardship and national reconciliation.
