Bamenda, Cameroon: In a solemn moment of reflection and remembrance, Catholic Priest Rev Fr Killian Ndonui delivered a strong call to action for journalists and related media professionals gathered at the CJTU NW 2024 Awards Café, part of the World Press Freedom Day 2024 celebrations organized by the Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union (CJTU) North West Chapter
Kicking off the event with a prayer session, Rev Fr Killian Ndonui led attendees in honouring the memory of fallen journalists and related media professionals.
With reverence for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, the Priest emphasized the importance of upholding truth and integrity in journalism. "While I recommend respect for professional norms," he remarked, "we must also rely on God for protection in our pursuit of truth."
Drawing inspiration from the biblical Book of Wisdom, Rev Fr Killian Ndonui encouraged journalists and related media professionals to remain steadfast and wise in navigating the challenging landscape of modern media. His words served as a rallying cry for ethical journalism and principled reporting.
Nji Ignatius, President of the Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union NW Chapter, expressed gratitude to Rev Fr Killian for his contribution to the event. "Rev Fr Killian's message serves as a powerful reminder for journalists and related media professionals to honour the memory of our fallen colleagues and to reflect on our own commitment to truth and integrity," Ignatius remarked.
With the solemn tributes, the CJTU NW 2024 Awards also featured a special memorial for media professionals who have tragically passed away in the region. Honouring the legacies of individuals such as Eric Motumo, Peterkins Manyong, Fawah Agather, Michael Ndi, Anye Nde Nsoh, and Rebecca Jeme, six awards were presented in their honor.
The recipients of these awards exemplified excellence in journalism across various categories, including critical writing, human interest reporting, sports writing, gender reporting, political reporting, and coverage of women's issues. Notable awardees included Mbuh Stella of Equinox TV, Dingana Raymond of Abakwa FM Radio, Bakah Derick of Hilltopvoices Communications Group Ltd, Buba Laura Chifon of The Cameroon Insider Newspaper, Colday Ndofekeh Olivier of CRTV North West, and Ruth Che Watchong of The Upfront web blog.
Speaking on behalf of the CJTU, Nji Ignatius highlighted the Union's commitment to promoting development-oriented journalism and fostering a society where the press remains free from undue political influence.
"These awards honour the legacy of our fallen colleagues while also inspiring a new generation of journalists to uphold the values of truth, integrity, and accountability," Ignatius affirmed.
As journalists and related media professionals continue their noble pursuit of truth, the words of Rev Fr Killian Ndonue serve as a guiding light, reminding them of the profound responsibility that comes with the power of the press.
