In an outstanding tribute to the rich cultural fabric of the Nso people, Shey Yungsi Christopher delivered a mesmerizing performance during the 85th anniversary celebration of Yaa Helena Ngo Ndzerem in Bamenda on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
Presenting his song "Nsii woŋ Nso" in pure Lamnso, the language of the Nso people in the North West Region of Cameroon, Shey Yungsi captivated the audience with his lyrical prowess and profound homage to the Mighty Nso Monarch and its surrounding Fondoms.
The Hilltop Mail Newspaper had the opportunity to delve deeper into the significance of Shey Yungsi's composition with Nso language expert, Shey Dr. Bulami Edward Fonyuy. In his explanation, Dr. Fonyuy shed light on the intricate layers of meaning embedded within the song.

"Nsii woŋ Nso" serves not only as an oral poetry rendition but also as a historical narrative, meticulously outlining the demographic configuration of the Nso Fondom. Through evocative verses, Shey Yungsi delineates the social hierarchy within Nso society, from princes to royal descendants, retainers, and aboriginals, while celebrating the geographical expanse and natural bounty of Nsoland.
"He defines the demographic configuration of the Nso Fondom which is perceivable from the social categories such as 'Wonto' (princes), the Duy 'royal descendance, the Ncheelav 'retainer class' and the Nso Mntar 'Nso aboriginals. Through calibration from the North to South and from East to West, Yungsi sings the greatness of Nsoland while delimiting its boundaries and celebrating its rich natural endowment." Interwoven with panegyric tributes to the Nso Fon, Shey Yungsi's performance transcends mere entertainment, emerging as a unique retelling of Nso's illustrious history. His lyrical chronicle resonated deeply with the audience, who stood in rapt attention as he delivered each verse with passion and reverence.
Mformi Ndzerem Stephen Njodzeka, visibly moved by Shey Yungsi's homage, expressed profound gratitude for the honour bestowed upon his mother and family.
In his concluding remarks, Shey Yungsi called upon the Nwerong Nso to remain vigilant guardians of Nso heritage, urging them to thwart any threat to its existence. His impassioned plea indicated the importance of preserving cultural identity in the face of modern challenges, identifying with all who bear witness to Nso's enduring legacy.
