Farida Tousuleman, a bright-eyed four-year-old, is one of over 100 children who received a fresh chance to pursue their dreams, thanks to the generosity of Hon. Agho Oliver. Through his donation of cash for school fees and essential supplies, including books, pens, and rulers, the Cameroonian MP has given Farida and others the tools to continue their education.
The highlight of the ceremonial event was a touching moment when Hon. Agho carried Farida in his arms as they posed with other beneficiaries and officials. With her arms clutching the books and cash envelope close to her heart, Farida gazed up at the MP, her expression one of wonder. After the photo session, Farida returned to her mother, handing over the envelope but holding tightly to her books, refusing to let them go.
When asked why she would not give up her books, Farida pointed to the cash she had handed her mother and simply said, “I gave that one.” Her bright smile lit up when this reporter greeted her and asked her name. She shared that she dreams of becoming a doctor someday, though for now, she knows only that doctors wear white gowns.
According to Farida’s mother, the little girl has always excelled in her private school in Bambui. Her natural curiosity and academic performance, often scoring above 15 out of 20, have made her stand out among her peers. Though she declined to speak about Farida’s father, her pride in her daughter’s aspirations was clear.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Agho explained that his donation was a gesture of gratitude to the people of his constituency who had elected him to the Cameroon Parliament, where he recently gained an esteemed role on the executive committee of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). His election came after a competitive vote on October 30, 2024, at the Pakistani Institute for Parliamentary Services, where he joined representatives from Egypt, Guyana, Pakistan, Uganda, Jamaica, Seychelles, and Ukraine on the international executive committee.
As part of the 45th Annual Forum and 13th Consultative General Assembly of the Parliamentarians on the International Criminal Court and Rule of Law, Hon. Agho also participated in discussions on international criminal justice and the death penalty. This high-level gathering, known as the Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians on the International Criminal Court (CAP-ICC), is the sole global event where political representatives discuss strategies to support international justice and sustainable peace.
Returning to his constituency, Hon. Agho’s focus on local needs was evident. While distributing cash gifts and study materials to orphans and underprivileged children in Bambui, he reminded them of their worth and purpose. “When anyone is perfectly in the plan of God, there is no reason to be afraid,” he told the children, adding that God was uplifting the people of Tubah and Bafut through his service.
Hon. Agho clarified that his assistance was offered to all in need, without discrimination. With humility, he likened himself to “a hunting dog” who finds abundance wherever people gather. He also shared that he had chosen to forego a first-class ticket on a recent trip to fund his commitment to children’s education in his constituency.
Though the donation event came nearly two months after the school year began, Hon. Agho pointed out that in many parts of the region, it is common for parents to struggle with obtaining all the necessary supplies at the start of term. His support, therefore, fills a critical gap for families unable to meet these immediate educational needs.
According to Tubah Divisional Officer Narcisse Metugue, the challenges faced by schools in his subdivision are significant, particularly regarding safety and infrastructure. Many children like Farida lack the basic resources to continue their education, and, in some cases, school buildings are so unsafe that students have been relocated to the divisional office. He commended Hon. Agho’s regular support, noting that his contributions are vital in the face of such hardships.
As Farida and her peers embark on a new term equipped with school materials, Hon. Agho’s support has not only lightened the financial burden on their families but also sparked hope. For Farida, these new books might just be the first steps towards a white coat and a career in medicine, proving that a little kindness can turn a child’s dreams into reality.
