PCC Decides 2024: Rev. Miki Hans Abia to build on Rev. Fonki’s legacy of peace, humanitarian efforts in conflict-hit Regions

The Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) has elected Reverend Miki Hans Abia as its 7th Moderator, with the responsibility of leading the church during one of the most turbulent periods in its history. His election, alongside Reverend Ayuk Solomon Eta as Synod Clerk, took place on Monday, 19 November 2024, at the PCC Synod Office in Buea, marking the conclusion of the 2024 Synod of Assurance.

The PCC, headquartered in the conflict-ridden North West and South West Regions of Cameroon, plays a vital role in advocating for peace, reconciliation, and social justice. As the church’s new leader, Rev Miki Hans Abia faces the daunting challenge of navigating a divided society, where the ongoing Anglophone crisis has caused widespread displacement, violence, and mistrust.

The new Moderator must contend with heightened expectations from the church’s about two and a half million members, many of whom look to the PCC as a stabilising force in a time of uncertainty. Rev Miki is also tasked with continuing the PCC’s humanitarian and educational work, which has been instrumental in supporting affected communities.
One of Rev Miki’s primary challenges will be to strengthen the church’s capacity to mediate in the socio-political crisis. The PCC has a history of promoting dialogue between conflicting parties, but deepening tensions in the Anglophone regions demand renewed efforts to promote understanding and healing.

Internally, Rev Miki must address divisions within the church itself, ensuring unity among its presbyteries while maintaining its mission to provide spiritual and material support to its followers.

Under his leadership, the PCC is expected to sustain and expand its vast network of schools, hospitals, and community projects. The church’s contribution to education and healthcare remains a cornerstone of its social impact, but financial and logistical constraints exacerbated by the crisis pose significant hurdles.

The Cameroon Christian University (CCU) and other PCC institutions will also require strategic oversight to remain functional and accessible to communities in need.

Rev Miki succeeds Rt Rev Fonki Samuel Forba, whose tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen the PCC’s institutional presence while addressing the escalating conflict. As the outgoing Moderator, Rt Rev Fonki leaves behind a legacy of endurance, but his successor faces an even more demanding landscape.

Born on 13 November 1966 in Tombel, South West Region, Rev Miki hails from Meta in the North West Region. His ecclesiastical journey spans over three decades, beginning with his ordination in 1997. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Systematic Theology and has served in various capacities, including as Presbyterial Secretary for Mamfe, Fako South, and East Mungo South presbyteries, as well as Direct Partnership Secretary.

Married to Nyango Viviane Afor Miki and a father of four, Rev Miki is known for his dedication to the church’s mission and his ability to inspire trust among the faithful.

Elected as the 12th Synod Clerk, Rev Ayuk Solomon Eta brings 24 years of pastoral experience to his new role. Born on 2 August 1977 in Eyumojock, South West Region, Rev Ayuk has served in multiple presbyteries and holds a Master’s degree in Systematic Theology.

His administrative expertise, coupled with a history of leadership roles such as Presbyterial Treasurer and Secretary, positions him as a key figure in supporting Rev Miki’s agenda.

As the PCC embarks on this new chapter, the church’s leadership faces immense pressure to deliver on its promise of being a voice for the voiceless and a source of stability. For Rev Miki Hans Abia, the task ahead is both a spiritual calling and a monumental challenge.

His ability to address the urgent needs of a conflict-weary population while maintaining the integrity and unity of the church will define his legacy. For many, his election symbolises renewed hope for peace and progress in Cameroon.
