Mile 4 Market Nkwen rises from the ashes as construction begins

The Mile 4 Nkwen market, once a hub of trade, has endured its share of misfortune over the past few years. In February 2021, a devastating fire swept through the market, reducing shops and goods to ashes, leaving traders scrambling to salvage what little remained.

Just as many were beginning to rebuild, another fire in December 2023 delivered a crushing blow, destroying even more livelihoods and highlighting the vulnerability of the market’s ageing and exposed structures. For traders and shoppers alike, these tragic incidents served as a painful reminder of the need for better infrastructure.

Now, hope has returned to the Mile 4 Nkwen Market with the start of construction on a new, modern market. Sponsored by C2D, a debt relief programme in Cameroon, the project promises to deliver a state-of-the-art facility within 15 months. The new market will feature administrative blocks, restaurants, parking lots, a motor park, shops, and public toilets  a major upgrade from the old, dilapidated structures that once stood.
Breaking down of old sheds

The old market has already been torn down, and temporary sheds have been erected to accommodate traders while construction is ongoing. However, the transition has not been without its challenges. Dust, noise, and limited space have made trading conditions difficult.
Temporal sheds

“The fires already left us in debt, and now this temporary arrangement is not easy. We are hopeful for the new market, but for now, customers are staying away because the space is congested, and the environment is uncomfortable.” Esther, who sells fresh produce shared with www.hilltopvoices.com

Markets like that of Mile 4 Nkwen are lifelines for local communities. They serve as the backbone of economic activity, providing a platform for rural farmers to sell their produce and for small traders to offer goods ranging from food items to clothing and household supplies. Beyond trade, markets also encourage social interactions, making them an integral part of community life. The construction of a modern market will not only improve safety and hygiene but also create a more organised and accessible space for vendors and buyers alike.
Despite the short-term inconveniences, there is a shared sense of optimism among the traders.

“We are suffering now, but this new market will change everything. With proper structures, toilets, and parking, we will attract more customers, and businesses will grow.” Peter, seller of household goods said.

The Mayor has called on all traders to exercise patience and cooperate with the construction team to ensure the project’s smooth execution.

As construction progresses, the vision of a safer, more efficient Mile 4 Market begins to take shape. For the traders who have weathered fires and hardship, the new market represents a fresh start, a chance to rebuild their businesses in an environment that meets modern standards.
