Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe has once again been recognised as one of the honourees for the prestigious Hilltopvoices Most Influential Personalities and Institutions in Bamenda III Municipality 2024, cementing his legacy as an outstanding leader. Under his stewardship, the Bamenda III Council has consistently demonstrated a commitment to promoting sustainable development, community engagement, and inclusive growth.
One of the flagship events of 2024 was the Bamenda III Mini Agro-Pastoral Show, held in December, which brought together 120 exhibitors from the Nkwen, Ndzah, and Ntasen Agricultural Poles. Farmers showcased a variety of agricultural products and livestock, and prizes such as trucks, grinding mills, oil press machines, fertilisers, and irrigation equipment were awarded. This initiative not only celebrated local farming efforts but also encouraged the adoption of modern agricultural techniques.
On 4 December 2024, the Bamenda III Council adopted a balanced budget of 784,794,904 FCFA for 2025. The budget prioritises critical projects, including road construction, water extension, and green spaces. Other key allocations include organising agro-pastoral shows, recruiting youths for holiday jobs, and ensuring the timely payment of salaries. His transparency in governance was further underscored during a Public Budget Policy Debate Session on 22 November 2024, where quarter representatives discussed pressing concerns and validated plans for the upcoming year.
Mayor Fongu has been instrumental in launching innovative infrastructure projects. The construction of the modern Mile 4 Market, funded by the C2D debt-relief programme, is set to boost economic activity with state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, the Menteh Bridge project and the tarring of roads from Nkwen District Hospital to New Road (Upper Bayelle Nkwen) promise to enhance connectivity within the municipality.
The Mayor’s visit to the small ruminant market at Mile 6 Nkwen, where potable water systems and administrative blocks are being developed, further underscores his focus on improving living conditions and economic opportunities.
The Council’s initiatives extend beyond infrastructure. Over 100 children with disabilities received educational support during a special event sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Similarly, the Inclusive Holiday Job Programme engaged youths in meaningful activities, promoting personal growth and providing financial assistance for their education.
The Bamenda III Inclusive Gala Match, held on 6 September 2024, highlighted the Council’s dedication to gender equality and inclusivity, with male, female, and under-15 football teams showcasing their talent.
In response to flooding in Below Foncha, the Council spearheaded community clean-ups and engaged residents in restoring affected areas. Additionally, the Council inspected bakeries across the municipality, ensuring adherence to hygiene standards, with sanctions proposed for non-compliance.
Efforts to improve water management were marked by the installation of a sand pump at the Council's water project site, ensuring better water conservation and quality.
The Mayor’s collaborative spirit was evident in the South-South Cooperation Agreement with Banyo Council in the Adamawa Region. This partnership aims to strengthen ties and promote sustainable development across municipalities.
Through initiatives that prioritise agriculture, infrastructure, education, and inclusivity, Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe has proven himself a visionary leader committed to the advancement of Bamenda III Municipality. His recognition as one of the Hilltopvoices Most Influential Personalities is an indicator to his dedication to transforming lives and promoting community-driven development.
