It was during a live homily on Radio Evangelium, the Catholic Church's station in Bamenda, that the current Archbishop of Bamenda, The Most Reverend Andrew Nkea Fuanya, shared a touching moment on the Feast of All Souls. Preaching to a congregation in Bayelle, he asked the children if they could name any potential saints from Cameroon. A young voice confidently responded, “Bishop Paul Verdzekov.” This child, likely too young to have known the late prelate personally, must have inherited this reverence from their parents. This is certainly proof of his spiritual legacy as a man whose life was synonymous to holiness. By the faith of many, Paul Verdzekov deserves to be recognised as a saint.
Today, 15 years after his passing, Hilltopvoices Newspaper remembers Archbishop Paul Mbiybe Verdzekov not only as a spiritual leader but as a man of profound humility and dedication to the Gospel. His life was a reflection of Christ’s words in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Born in Shisong on January 22, 1931, and ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1961, Paul Verdzekov answered God’s call with outstanding devotion. His appointment as the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Bamenda on August 13, 1970, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. His episcopal consecration on November 8, 1970, was a historic moment, and in 1982, when Bamenda was elevated to an archdiocese, he became its first archbishop.
Throughout his tenure, Archbishop Verdzekov embodied the words of John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” He prioritised pastoral care, theological education, and the growth of the Catholic Church in Cameroon. His humility and simplicity endeared him to the faithful, while his intellectual depth earned him respect across ecclesiastical and academic circles.
Archbishop Verdzekov retired in 2006, but his influence remained palpable until his death on January 26, 2010, at the age of 79. His life continues to inspire, as evidenced by the young child’s declaration of his sanctity.
Many remember him as a man who lived by example, embodying the Beatitudes in his ministry. He was a peacemaker, a comforter to the mourning, and a voice for the poor and marginalised. His leadership during tumultuous times in Cameroon showed his faith and commitment to justice and peace.
The enduring respect for Archbishop Verdzekov has led many to wonder: could he be recognised as a saint? While the process of canonisation in the Catholic Church is rigorous, the testimonies of those who knew him and even those who did not suggest that his life was one of exceptional holiness.
On this 15th anniversary of his passing, we at Hilltopvoices pay tribute to Archbishop Paul Mbiybe Verdzekov, a man whose life continues to shine as proof of faith and service. His legacy reminds us of the words of Proverbs 10:7: “The memory of the righteous is a blessing.”
