The city of Bamenda is preparing to bid a final farewell to one of its most distinguished sons, Hon. Peter Choo Fonso, popularly known as PC Fonso. Born on 15th November 1932 in Kob Village, Momo Division, PC Fonso’s journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and public service. After completing his primary education at Basel Mission Primary School Mbengwi in 1949, he pursued teacher training at Nyasoso, Batibo, and Kumba. His passion for education saw him serve as Headmaster in Nso (Bui Division) and later as a History teacher at Cameroon Protestant College, CPC Bali in 1961.

Determined to further his studies, he obtained his GCE O' and A' Levels before travelling to Great Britain, where he earned a degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Lampeter in 1966. Two years later, he obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of London.

Upon returning to Cameroon, he dedicated his career to the education sector, rising through the ranks as an Inspector of Education, Provincial Delegate of Education for the South West Region in 1979, and later as Cultural Counsellor at the Cameroon Embassy in London.

PC Fonso transitioned from education to politics in 1992 when he joined the Social Democratic Front (SDF). His deep commitment to the people saw him elected as SDF Member of Parliament for Mbengwi Central Sub-Division, a role he held for three terms between 1997 and 2013. His leadership was marked by integrity, advocacy for social justice, and a strong desire to see meaningful development in his constituency.

Even after stepping away from frontline politics, his interest in national affairs never faded. He remained a guiding voice, offering wisdom and counsel to the younger generation of leaders.

Beyond his professional and political life, PC Fonso was a devout Christian who lived by the principles of faith and service. He was baptised on 18th November 1949 at Basel Mission Church Mbengwi, a moment he held dear throughout his life. His belief in God was reflected in his actions, always standing for truth, fairness, and compassion.

This weekend’s memorial service at the Presbyterian Church Ntamulung will be a moment of reflection on the impact of PC Fonso’s life. Leaders from across the political and religious spectrum are expected to pay their last respects, acknowledging his immense contributions to education, governance, and the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon.

As preparations for his burial reach their final stages, tributes continue to pour in from those whose lives he touched.
