Time to officially christen the Yong Francis Arena

The name Yong Francis goes deeply within the sports and educational landscapes of Cameroon, especially in Bamenda. His unparalleled contributions to education, sports development, and community-building are etched into the hearts of many. Yet, as the Yong Sports Academy (YOSA) stadium in Njenefor Mile Six, Nkwen, stands as a physical indicator to his legacy, it remains nameless in his honour. I started using this name in 2014 when I was still working for Abakwa FM Radio. Today, it is increasingly being used and I think It is high time we officially christen it the Yong Francis Arena.

Yong Francis was not just a man; he was a movement. Born on January 8, 1945, he rose from humble beginnings to establish institutions that would redefine education and sports in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. His creation of the Yong Sports Academy in 2004 was a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering young football talents while emphasising education. He believed that football should not just produce athletes but well-rounded individuals who could thrive beyond the pitch.

His vision bore fruit: YOSA became a destination for aspiring footballers across Cameroon and beyond, attracting players even from countries like Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and beyond. With state-of-the-art facilities, professional coaches, and a commitment to formal education, the academy has shaped countless lives. Yet, what made Yong Francis exceptional was his  belief in discipline, education, and the power of sport to transform communities.

YOSA’s crowning moment came in December 2013 when the team won the prestigious Cup of Cameroon, defeating Canon Yaoundé in a historic match. This was not just a victory for the team but justification to Yong Francis’ relentless dedication to the sport. Tragically, he passed away shortly after the triumph, leaving behind a legacy that has continued to inspire the football fraternity.

His passing marked the end of an era but also the beginning of a movement to preserve his memory. Naming the stadium after him is not just a gesture; it is a recognition of his immense contributions to football and community development.

The YOSA stadium in Njenefor Mile Six is more than just a field; it is a symbol of hope and ambition. Built to nurture young talents and host top-tier football matches, it embodies the very principles that Yong Francis lived by. For over a decade, this stadium has been a fortress for YOSA, with the team boasting an unbeaten home record of 33 games since July 2018, according to sports journalist Afeseh Apong.

On January 26, 2025, YOSA returned to the field after a hiatus of over three years. Despite the absence of any formal tribute marking the 10th anniversary of Yong Francis’ passing, his spirit seemed to guide the team to a commanding 2-0 victory against AS Fortuna. This win, their first of the season, was a strong reminder of his enduring influence.

The upcoming clash against reigning Cup of Cameroon champions Colombe of Nja-et-Lobo offers a unique opportunity to pay homage to Yong Francis. Officially naming the stadium the Yong Francis Arena during this high-profile match would not only immortalise his name but also inspire the next generation of footballers and fans.

This act would send a powerful message about the value of preserving legacies and recognising those who have selflessly contributed to community development. It would also elevate the stadium’s status, making it a landmark in Cameroonian football.

Naming the stadium the Yong Francis Arena is more than a symbolic gesture; it is a moral imperative. It honours a man whose vision and sacrifices have touched countless lives.

Let us not wait any longer to give this legend the recognition he deserves. The Yong Francis Arena will stand as a permanent reminder of his legacy; a place where dreams are nurtured, talents are honed, and communities are united.

It is time to officially Christen the Yong Francis Arena. Let the name inspire greatness, just as the man himself did.
