During the celebrations marking World Wetlands Day on Sunday, 2 February 2025, in Bamenda, the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network (CCJN) recognised the hospital’s Director General, Dr Nsame Denis, and Service Manager, Fung John Ngum, for their commitment to quality services at the hospital.

The event, which concluded a week-long campaign on wetland restoration and conservation, brought together environmental advocates, media professionals, and key stakeholders dedicated to protecting nature. As part of the 2024 Wetland Restoration Development Initiative Award and the 2024 Sustainable Development Initiative Award, individuals, institutions, and organisations that have demonstrated exceptional dedication to environmental conservation were celebrated.

Fung John Ngum, with visible satisfaction, received the awards on behalf of himself and Dr Nsame Denis. He was named Best Medical Personality and Finance Administrator of the Year, while Dr Nsame Denis was honoured as the Best Hospital Director and Health Personality of the Year.

Speaking to the press, Fung expressed gratitude to CCJN for the recognition, describing it as a powerful motivation.

"This award is a reminder that the work we do at the Bamenda Regional Hospital goes beyond healthcare. We are deeply committed to serving the people of the North West Region, and this recognition reinforces our resolve to continue providing quality healthcare while upholding environmental sustainability."

The ceremony was part of CCJN’s broader efforts to celebrate those at the forefront of environmental conservation and nation-building. In a statement, CCJN President Tamukong Roland highlighted the significance of the event, aligning it with global efforts championed by the UN Convention on Wetlands and other international organisations.

Media actors and nature-based solution reporters joined the global community in celebrating World Wetlands Day under the theme, “Wetlands and human beings: protecting the environment for our common future.”

The recognition of the Bamenda Regional Hospital’s leadership not only emphasis the intersection of healthcare and environmental conservation but also serves as an inspiration for other institutions to adopt sustainable practices.

With NGOs, CSOs, institutions, and individuals receiving gold and bronze medals for their contributions to wetland restoration, the event stood as justification to the growing movement towards environmental responsibility. The celebrations, organised under the canopy of the Climate Demand Action (CDA) campaign, showcased the collective efforts of individuals and organisations dedicated to safeguarding nature for future generations.
