The people of Menteh gathered in jubilation on Wednesday, 5 February 2025, to celebrate the official completion of the Menteh Bridge that now reconnects their community to the rest of Bamenda III.
As the contractor, King Forba, proceeded with the grading of the road from the bridge to the Menteh commercial centre, excitement filled the air. Among those present was Quarterhead Taniform Stephen, who had been at the forefront of community mobilisation during the challenging months following the collapse of the previous structure.
Just months ago, the Menteh Bridge was in a state of disrepair, forcing residents to rely on makeshift wooden planks to cross. The situation was dire, with safety concerns mounting and economic activities stifled. Recognising the urgency, Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe of the Bamenda III Council took swift action, securing funding and mobilising stakeholders to construct a durable, reinforced concrete bridge.
Now, with the project completed ahead of schedule, the Mayor expressed satisfaction with the speedy execution, especially as the rainy season approaches.
"This is an achievement for Menteh and for Bamenda III as a whole. Infrastructure development is key to improving lives, and this bridge is a perfect example of what we can achieve when the community and the Council work together. I am grateful to everyone who collaborated to make this a reality," Mayor Fongu said
The new six-metre reinforced concrete bridge is built to withstand harsh weather conditions, it ensures safe passage for pedestrians and small vehicles, facilitating easier access to markets, schools, and medical facilities.
For Quarterhead Taniform Stephen, the bridge represents a turning point for the Menteh community.
"We endured difficult times when the bridge gave way, but today, we are witnessing the fruits of perseverance and collaboration. This bridge will serve generations to come." He said
The destroyed bridge
Residents who had been cut off from essential services can now move freely, restoring economic activities and strengthening social ties.
With the success of the Menteh Bridge, the Bamenda III Council remains committed to further infrastructure development in the municipality. The ongoing road grading leading to the Menteh commercial centre is part of a broader effort to improve accessibility and enhance economic growth.
Road grading
The reopening of the bridge is not just about crossing from one side to another. According to Mayor Fongu, it is about rebuilding trust in governance, promoting community engagement, and paving the way for future development.
As the people of Menteh walk, drive, and transport goods across their new bridge, one thing is clear: when communities and leaders unite, progress is inevitable.
