Bamenda III DO Ayuni Austin calls for collective action in tackling waste management in subdivision

The issue of waste management in Bamenda including Bamenda III Subdivision has become increasingly critical, particularly as the rainy season approaches. During the Administrative and Management Account Ordinary Session held on Friday, 28 March 2025, councillors and administrative authorities addressed this pressing concern.

Deputy Mayor Margaret Ndzelen raised the issue of hygiene and sanitation in the municipality encouraging her fellow councillors to collaborate with quarter heads and youths to clean their constituencies.

Reacting to the subject, the Divisional Officer (DO), Ayuni Austin Sakah emphasised the need for immediate action, urging local authorities to take proactive measures in waste management.

“The City Council is responsible for waste disposal in Bamenda, but we cannot sit back and expect them to solve the problem alone... Councillors must engage in sensitisation efforts alongside quarter heads to remind residents that indiscriminately dumping waste into gutters is harmful. As the rains approach, blocked drainage channels will lead to flooding and other environmental hazards. We must act now to prevent future disasters.” DO Ayuni stated

The DO also pointed out a disturbing trend where residents deliberately dispose of waste during rainfall, expecting the water to wash it away. He called for intensified community awareness campaigns to curb this practice.

Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe echoed these concerns, reaffirming the council’s commitment to finding sustainable waste management solutions.

“We recognise that waste disposal is a challenge, but we are taking steps to address it. Public awareness campaigns and community engagement are among the strategies we are considering."

In light of these discussions, the council resolved to work closely with quarter heads and local leaders to educate the population on responsible waste disposal practices.

With these commitments, Bamenda III Council aims to enhance a cleaner and healthier environment, ensuring that waste management remains a top priority in municipal governance.
