In an unusual spiritual mobilisation, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR), under the leadership of Bishop Sosthène Léopold Bayemi Matjei, Bishop of the Diocese of Obala and National Ecclesiastical Assistant of the CCR, has announced a nationwide prayer campaign for the peaceful liberation of Cameroon in 2025.
The initiative, structured around three major periods of prayer and intercession, seeks divine intervention for Cameroon, a nation that has been under the leadership of one President for over 40 years.
The goal, according to Bishop Bayemi, is for the country to receive “a leader after God’s own heart” while ensuring peace and stability.
Citing Ephesians 6:10-18, Bishop Bayemi emphasised that this prayer effort is not directed against any individual but rather at spiritual forces affecting the country.
“This struggle in prayer is not aimed at any human being born of flesh but rather at the powers of darkness,” he stated.
The prayer campaign will take the form of novenas, with each session featuring moments of collective intercession. The Lenten Novena will be accompanied by a penitential march, while the Pentecost Novena will incorporate Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. A final novena at the end of August will culminate in a Jericho march in all dioceses on Saturday, 6 September 2025.
Each day of the novena will involve the recitation of the Rosary for Peace in Cameroon, including scripture readings, penitential psalms, invocations of the Holy Spirit, and litanies. The Bishop has called on all dioceses to actively participate and ensure that designated places serve as visible centres of communion for these prayers.
Diocesan authorities are encouraged to seek administrative authorisations from the government for public processions, particularly for the penitential and Jericho marches.
“We know that we can count on the diligence and sense of ecclesial responsibility of those in charge of the Diocesan Services of Communion for the organisation and smooth running of these moments of intense prayer for our Country and the involvement of all expressions of the Charismatic Renewal as well as that of all peace-loving people,” Bishop Bayemi remarked.
With this bold call to prayer, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is mobilising a historic spiritual movement aimed at national transformation through faith. This initiative comes at a time when many Cameroonians are reflecting on the country's leadership and future.
Whether these prayers will lead to a tangible change remains to be seen, but for the faithful, the call to intercede is clear: “May the Lord liberate Cameroon in peace and give it a leader after His own heart.”
